Three weeks before you move
Start your serious packing. Set out the clothes you plan to use over the next few weeks, and box up the rest in the apartment kit. Label the contents of all moving boxes, and pack carefully. Keep your everyday items easily accessible to use before your move, and basically, prepare to live out of your suitcase and a few medium boxes. Pack phone books from your old town in the file moving box. This will make staying in touch with old friends easier.
If you've never set up a meal plan before, now's the time. You don't want to eat out every night your last three weeks, but you don't want a fridge and freezer full of food to move with you. Start cleaning them out, eating what's left or throwing it away. Arrange to clean your new home if it's empty. This will give you a nice pristine environment to set up your new home after a move. Arrange for your Children's school records to be forwarded to the new school district. Contact your children's doctors, dentists and your own to forward medical records to new physicians. Set up a new bank account in your new hometown, if you must switch banks. Arrange for a safe deposit box, and the transfer of contents.
Now's a good time to hold a garage sale. Box up what's left in cheap moving boxes and donate it to a charity for a tax write off. Be sure to collect a receipt when you donate.
