When you decide to move, the best course of action is to prepare a plan. Literally sit down and write out a plan of action for your move. It helps if you keep it all in one centralized notebook. Call this your MOVING BOOK. It can be spiral bound with pockets or a three ring binder with lots of paper. What you are going to use your Moving Book for is to keep track of everything you need. Make lots of lists. Assign your lists to family members. Don't forget your young children. They want to help with your move and assist too! Put them in charge of pets, toys or DVD's. Show them their list of to do's in your Moving Book. The more your children feel involved in the move, the better they will be about helping, and dealing with moving.

ONE MONTH OUT

Go to the Post Office and put in a change of address. Contact phone, cable, gas, water, electric, etc and schedule shut off's or transfer of service for the day after your move. Contact utility companies for your new home and arrange for service to start. Start packing up items you don't use everyday. Don't forget to mark each box with color coded markers. One color per room. List items in the box. Use this time to plan a garage sale to start clearing out all of the junk, clutter and extra items you have accumulated in your home. A garage sale can put a couple of extra hundred bucks in your pocket for the move, plus you don't have to pay to move stuff, and it clears out a lot of room in your new house.
